The Historic Lyric Theater – Black Archives

Historic Lyric Theater is a historic theater very close to Miami Downtown. Theatre has been open for over 100 years, since 1913 and it used to be a major entertainment centre for blacks living in Miami. It was a source of pride and culture within Overtown. Theater served as a social gathering place free of discrimination.

These days is theatre still used for social gatherings and the exhibits are trying to remind the importance of this place within back community in Miami. Part of the theatre is also The Black Archives, its purpose is to document the black experience in Miami-Dade County from 1896 to the present, which, for a variety of reasons, is not widely documented. From the photographs and documents of pioneer families to souvenir programs from churches and organizations, The Black Archives preserves the identity of black South Florida.
